Sherman W. Potts attempted to save Leon D. Duey from suffocation, Igo, California, July 29, 1974. When he entered a water well 20 feet deep and helped in saving a youth who had been overcome therein, Duey, 72, then lost consciousness and collapsed on the bottom of the well. Among those attracted to the scene was Potts, 26, clergyman, who descended into the well on a ladder with a rope tied around him and held by persons at ground level. Potts tied another rope around Duey, who then was pulled out. Feeling dizzy and too weak to climb out, Potts also was pulled from the well. Duey could not be revived. 54575-6146
