Sherry Clamp Stone saved Colie W. Miller from being struck by a runaway automobile, Donalds, South Carolina, January 27, 1987. Miller, 68, parked his car and left it running in the lot of a small store. The car suddenly began to move backward in widening circles that took it onto a highway and close to the store’s gasoline pumps. When Miller ran to stop the car, he was knocked down and run over. He lay in the path of the car. Having seen the accident from inside the store, Mrs. Stone, 36, contractor, ran outside, intercepted the car, and opened its passenger door. The door struck her, but Mrs. Stone threw herself forward onto the car’s floorboard. With her hand, she applied the brakes, and the car stopped just short of Miller. Miller recovered from a broken rib, and Mrs. Stone from minor bruises.
