Shirley Ewen Bayerle rescued Joan E. Hoskey from a homicidal attack, San Francisco, California, November 29, 1971. Miss Hoskey, 40, was teaching a kindergarten class when a woman entered and, shouting vicious epithets, attacked her with an instrument that appeared to be an ice pick. Mrs. Bayerle, 35, kindergarten teacher, was attracted from her classroom and saw the woman stabbing Miss Hoskey repeatedly. Running to the woman, Mrs. Bayerle struck her with a broom. The woman took the broom from Mrs. Bayerle and pursued her into the hall. When Mrs. Bayerle fell to the floor, the woman sat astride her and stabbed her about 12 times. The woman fled, but later was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon. Miss Hoskey and Mrs. Bayerle recovered after being hospitalized for their wounds.
