Shirley L. Starkey, 22, student, saved Lucy B., 63, and Annie B. McDowell, 26, from being shot, Huntington, West Virginia, February 16, 1915. Learning that an insane man was in the house and knowing from previous actions of the man that Mrs. McDowell and her daughter were in danger, Starkey, a roomer in the McDowell house, descended from the second story and confronted the man. The man turned toward Mrs. McDowell, drawing a revolver. Starkey grasped at the hand in which he held it, but the man quickly pointed the revolver at Starkey and fired. The bullet passed through Starkey’s chest near the heart and lodged in the muscle of the back. Starkey seized the man, put him down on his back, and held him. Others came and took the revolver from the man and helped Starkey to a couch. The man drew another revolver and fired three shots at persons in the house without effect and then killed himself. Starkey was disabled 86 days but recovered. 14403-1399
