Sidney J. Bentley, 30, salesman, assisted in an attempt to save Esther M. Wepking and Arthur A. Harwood, both 23, from drowning, Madison, Wisconsin, April 24, 1921. (See case of MARGARET BRENNECKE.) Bentley and a companion started out soon after Studley and Smith; and after the raft had capsized, Bentley, slightly dazed, got a life preserver floating nearby, and then started to swim toward shore. He passed Smith and Miss Brennecke as they swam and offered assistance to Miss Brennecke. Bentley finally reached wadable water, having swum three eighths of a mile, but he then collapsed and was taken to shore by several men. 21358-1891
