Simon Fried, 38, clothes trimmer, rescued Edwin J. Humphrys, 51, policeman, from a homicidal attack, Baltimore, Maryland, August 22, 1946. Humphrys became involved in a scuffle with a man whom he was questioning; and the man struck him with a revolver, knocking him unconscious. Humphrys fell in the street, and his revolver slid 10 feet from him. From the opposite side of the street Fried ran to the revolver, picked it up, and pointed it at the assailant, who was bending over Humphrys, and ordered him to let Humphrys alone. The assailant shot Fried, the bullet lodging close to his spine. Although suffering intense pain, Fried sat up and fired three shots at the assailant, who ran away unharmed. Humphrys regained consciousness within several minutes and went to the aid of Fried. Fried was in a critical condition for a time and suffered permanent partial disablement. 40795-3499
