Stanislaus J. Deveau saved Darlene M. Deveau from drowning, Mavilette, Nova Scotia, July 20, 1977. Darlene, 8, fell into the Bay of Fundy and was carried into deep water in an area of swirling current 25 feet from a culvert under a roadway. Deveau, 21, cook, entered the water and swam to Darlene, who struggled with him and caused him to be submerged briefly several times. Deveau managed to keep them from being swept into the culvert and, when Darlene lost consciousness, succeeded in towing her out of the swirling current to safety.
