Stanislaus Wiecki, 34, investigator, died saving Stanley Urbanik, 8, from drowning, South River, New Jersey, August 13, 1922. Stanley swam into deep water in the South River, 30 feet from the bank, but was then unable to swim to the bank because of a current. Wiecki waded from the bank, dressed, and reached Stanley after a swim of 24 feet. He took hold of Stanley’s arm, and Stanley grasped him with both hands. Wiecki freed himself, but Stanley then climbed upon Wiecki’s back from behind, and both went underwater at least once. A rowboat was taken to them by a man who had some difficulty paddling against the current with a piece of board, and he drew Stanley into the boat. Wiecki sank before the man could get hold of him, and he was drowned. 22717-1861
