Stanley A. Mayer saved Dora C. McDermott from being killed by a train, Redwood City, California, August 9, 1933. Mrs. McDermott, 82, walked on a crossing to a track on which a train was approaching at a speed of 36 m.p.h. Mayer, 25, mail carrier, ran 45 feet alongside the track to the crossing and stepped between the rails of the track to Mrs. McDermott, reaching her when the locomotive was 30 feet from them. He clasped his arms around her and pushed her as he recrossed the rail. He narrowly cleared the train, which did not stop. 33394-2782
