Stephen Anthony Lopez saved a woman from being struck by a train, Toronto, Ontario, November 23, 1990. Lopez, 25, research assistant, was waiting for a train in a subway station when he saw a 37-year-old woman lying unconscious between the rails of the near track. He then saw a train, traveling at about 30 m.p.h on the track, enter the opposite end of the station. Lopez immediately jumped onto the track, where he crouched, grasped the woman by her attire, and pulled her to a point of safety beneath the overhang of the platform. Although the train’s operator applied its emergency brakes, the front of the train passed Lopez and the woman, barely missing them, before the train stopped.
