Stephen Eric Dobias saved Richard A. Brooks from drowning, Economy, Pennsylvania, July 6, 1973. While swimming in a pond, Richard, 16, became tired and called for help in deep water 85 feet from the bank. Stephen, 13, schoolboy, swam 30 feet to Richard and, with the latter holding to his shoulder, began towing him. Richard lost his hold on Stephen and went under. Stephen brought him back to the surface; but Richard began struggling, and both went under briefly. Fearing further struggle, Stephen struck Richard, who thereafter remained quiet. Stephen towed Richard to wadable water and thence to the bank.
