Stephen Yako, 36, beat treater operator, died attempting to save Joseph F. Randall, 11, and James L. Gresham, 12, from drowning, Detroit, Michigan, July 4, 1946. Joseph and James fell from a ledge of a bridge pier into water 15 feet deep in the Detroit River 20 feet from the bank. Yako, who removed only his coat, dived from the bank, swam to one of the boys, and took hold of him; but the boy disappeared, and the other boy then threw his arms around Yako’s neck. They were submerged briefly once and then sank. All three were drowned. 40762-3484
