Steven C. Hemstock helped to save Lucie E. Latch from drowning, Springfield, Illinois, December 14, 1978. When he saw Mrs. Latch floating face down in a lake, Hemstock, 21, security guard, jumped from a high retaining wall into the cold water and swam to her. Mrs. Latch revived as Hemstock towed her to the wall and thence to metal plates forming the breast of a dam where he supported her while they awaited aid in getting out of the water. Police and others arrived and threw Hemstock a rope, by which he and Mrs. Latch were pulled to a low point on the wall and aided out. Both were treated for exposure.
