Steven F. Derepkowski helped to save Casper Amrhein from drowning, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, August 4, 1989. Aboard a boat with friends, Amrhein, 53, fell overboard into Lake Winnebago during a storm at night that produced five-foot waves. Aboard the same boat, Derepkowski, 23, roofer, seized a life jacket and immediately jumped into the lake after him. He gave the life jacket to Amrhein, then attempted to swim back to the boat, which was drifting away. A rescue boat was notified and located Derepkowski and Amrhein about 30 minutes later. Although Amrhein was not injured, Derepkowski was treated for exposure at the hospital, and he recovered.
