Steven Ferrer Thompson rescued Susan K. Stark and Joshua A. Fugitt from a runaway automobile, Pekin, Illinois, April 11, 1990. Miss Stark, 26, accompanied by Joshua, 2, was driving a car on a busy four-lane highway when a medical condition caused her to black out. The car continued traveling, going into lanes of opposing traffic. Thompson, 32, operations supervisor, was the passenger of an ambulance that was approaching the scene when he saw the runaway car. Thompson jumped from the moving ambulance and pursued Miss Stark’s car on foot. Arriving at the passenger side of the car as it traveled about 10 m.p.h., Thompson opened the door, entered the car, and disengaged the car’s gears, taking the car to a stop.
