Steven Jacob Shannon saved a group of people from assault, Houston, Texas, November 25, 2022. Fifteen people, including Shannon, 39, property manager, were at a distillery when a disgruntled earlier customer re-entered with a semi-automatic pistol and fired rounds into the ceiling from a stairwell at the entrance before lowering the gun and firing a single shot in the direction of the bar, where most of the patrons were congregated. Standing at an auxiliary bar across the room from the main bar, where his wife and friends had gathered, Shannon, moved to his hands and knees at the sound of the gunshots before moving, crouched, toward the assailant along his blindside as others scattered toward cover. Shannon then leaped head-first over a set of stadium-style seating and a railing bordering the stairwell and managed to disarm the assailant, who he attempted to tackle to the ground in the stairwell. Shannon returned to his feet, bear-hugged the assailant, then drove him through an open doorway. Once outside, Shannon continued to march the assailant backward until the duo toppled over a city bikeshare station. Now on the ground, Shannon then wrestled with the assailant, eventually securing him in a jiu-jitsu chokehold until police arrived and arrested the assailant. No one in the distillery was injured during the incident. Shannon suffered a concussion and bruising as a result of the rescue; he recovered.
