Steven Ray attempted to save Jerry G. Holloway from drowning, Folly Beach, South Carolina, August 13, 1987. Holloway, 34, and his daughter were in the Atlantic Ocean about 200 feet from the beach. When the daughter shouted for help, Steven, 16, high school student, and his friend ran into the water and swam to them. Reaching Holloway, who was unconscious and floating face down, Steven turned him over, obtained a hold on him, and swam back to shore against a seaward current, pulling him. Just before Steven reached shore, others waded into the water and took Holloway the remaining distance. Steven was exhausted, but he recovered. Holloway could not be revived and was pronounced dead of drowning.
