Steven Roy Edmonson rescued Joshua L. and Jonah L. Jasper from burning, LaGrange, Georgia, December 17, 1985. Brothers Joshua, 3, and Jonah, 1, were inside the cab of a tractor-trailer that was parked at a weighing station when fire broke out in the cab and filled it with dense smoke. Alerted to the fire, Edmonson, 31, transportation enforcement officer, tried to open the driver’s door, but it was locked. After prying open a vent and rolling down the door’s window, Edmonson climbed into the cab and, unable to see because of the smoke, felt for the boys. Flames rolled above him. Locating Joshua in an attached sleeping berth, Edmonson passed him outside to others and left the cab. Learning that Jonah was still inside, Edmonson re-entered as flames issued from the driver’s window. He found Jonah behind the driver’s seat and passed him outside. Edmonson then dived from the cab, which moments later became fully engulfed in flames. Joshua died two days later of severe burns. Jonah and Edmonson recovered from smoke inhalation and lesser burns. 60834-7053
