Stevon F. Rawlinson saved a man from being struck by a train, Pomona, California, February 9, 1973. Rawlinson, 22, hospital groundsman, saw a man walking on a railroad track on which a freight train was approaching. After climbing over two fences, Rawlinson ran to the track and reached a position between the rails when the locomotive was about 900 feet from the man, who still was walking toward the oncoming train. Approaching the man from behind, Rawlinson grasped him around the waist and pulled him from the path of the train, which narrowly missed them as it passed
