Stewart E. Orange, Jr., saved James H. Waller from burning, Petersburg, Virginia, October 10, 1991. Waller, 95, was in his bedroom when fire erupted in the kitchen of the one-story residence. Driving in the neighborhood, Orange, 38, youth counselor, was alerted to the fire. He entered through the front door of the house but returned outside because of the thick smoke, which precluded visibility. After ascertaining Waller’s location, Orange broke out, then climbed through, a window in Waller’s bedroom. Requiring repeated attempts, he located Waller amidst dense smoke and intense heat. He pulled Waller to the window and, with help from others outside, removed him from the house. Orange then climbed to safety. Waller was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and he recovered. Orange also required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation, and he too recovered.
