Stuart E. Mastin saved Daniel C. McCrady from drowning, Clearwater, Florida, March 3, 1940. A kayak in which McCrady, 24, stenographer, was riding in the Gulf of Mexico overturned in water 18 feet deep. McCrady held to the kayak and swam and drifted, becoming dazed and numb, to a point three eighths of a mile from shore. The water was cold, and choppy waves were three feet high. From shore Mastin, 21, telephone switchman, waded and then swam 2,000 feet to McCrady. Holding alternately to the kayak and to McCrady with one hand, with the aid of wind and waves he swam a mile and a quarter to wadable water. McCrady was aided to shore. He became unconscious but was revived. Mastin waded to shore and was fatigued and chilled. 38829-3221
