Susan Ruth Sherwood saved Dale B. Smith from drowning, Lakeside, Ohio, July 1, 1925. Dale, 12, who could not swim, got on a small raft and paddled with his hands until he was 115 feet from shore. He then became frightened and jumped into water 7.5 feet deep. Susan, 11, schoolgirl, who was a poor swimmer, waded 50 feet toward Dale carrying a lifebelt. She then rested on the lifebelt and swam 60 feet to Dale through deep water. He put his arms around her arms and body, and a struggle followed before she could regain the use of her arms. Susan struck him on the temple with her fist and then swam 20 feet toward shore with Dale holding around her waist and his head resting on the lifebelt. A swimmer met them and took Dale to shore. 25511-2122
