Susanna Mizerak saved Joseph Piehota from drowning, Little Falls, New York, September 21, 1924. Joseph, 4, fell off a wall of the New York State Barge Canal into water 12 feet deep. Susanna, 11, schoolgirl, who was fully clothed, jumped from the wall, which was vertical and smooth, six feet down to the water near Joseph. She caught hold of his clothing and swam 22 feet to a ladder in the wall. She was weak and with difficulty kept her hold of Joseph and caught hold of the ladder. A man then arrived and carried Joseph up the ladder, and Susanna climbed up. 24661-2116
