Sylvester 0. McHolmes helped attempt to rescue Johnny A. Lane from electrocution, Atlanta, Georgia, March 11, 1988. An electric company employee, Lane, 35, entered an underground power distribution vault that was partially filled with water and was electrocuted after contacting an energized component. A co-worker entered the vault for him and shouted for help. McHolmes, 34, newspaper distributor, heard the shouts and approached the vault. Although power to the vault was still on, McHolmes descended into the vault and with the co-worker attempted over the course of several minutes to remove Lane to the surface, at one point McHolmes receiving a shock when he touched an energized beam. Lane was eventually pulled from the vault by rescue personnel, after the electricity was turned off, but he could not be revived.
