Tammy J. Stone helped to save Marvin W. Curtis from being struck by a train, Amarillo, Texas, January 16, 1996. Curtis, 34, was the sole occupant of a pickup truck that left the road after a highway accident and stopped on a railroad track. A train was approaching on the track; its engineer applied the train’s emergency brakes when he saw the truck. Another motorist, Ms. Stone, 35, hazardous waste coordinator, saw the accident, then became aware of the approaching train. She parked and ran to the passenger side of the pickup but found the door on that side locked. The train bearing down, Ms. Stone ran to the driver’s side of the truck, where a man was attempting to pull Curtis through the opened door. With some difficulty, Ms. Stone and that man grasped Curtis and pulled him from the truck, then away from the track. Seconds later, the train struck the driver’s side of the truck and pushed it along the track before stopping several hundred feet from the point of impact.
