Terreatha LeAnn Barnes rescued Corey L. Osburne and others from a runaway automobile, La Fayette, Georgia, April 19, 1992. Corey, 6, and two other children were inside a station wagon parked in a driveway when the car began to drift backward toward the street. A neighbor, Terreatha, 11,student, who was nearby, saw the situation and immediately ran to the car. Catching up to it as it entered the street, she opened the front passenger door, and, as the car continued across the street, broke through a fence, and went over an embankment, she entered it and applied the brakes with herhands, taking the car to a stop. Requiring surgery for a fractured jaw sustained during the rescue, Terreatha was hospitalized overnight. She recovered.
