Terry L. Bullard helped to save an indeterminate number of persons from assault, Maryville, Illinois, March 8, 2009. During a morning church service being attended by about 100, including Bullard, 39, repair shop manager, the pastor was preaching when a man entered the sanctuary, proceeded down the center aisle, and stood in front of him. The man produced a semiautomatic pistol and shot at the pastor but missed. As the pastor moved along the platform, the assailant pursued him, firing repeatedly, the last time mortally wounding him. One of the congregants struggled against the assailant and was stabbed by him. Bullard also approached the assailant and, blocking his path, grasped him about the shoulders to take him to the floor. He was stabbed repeatedly in an ensuing struggle but with other congregants subdued the assailant until police arrived and arrested him. Bullard and the other congregant who was stabbed received hospital treatment for their wounds, Bullard requiring surgery for a chest wound and physical rehabilitation. They recovered.
