Terry L. Robinson rescued Douglas R. and Daniel C. Holloway from burning, Norfolk, Virginia, April 20, 1987. Douglas, 6, and Daniel, 13, were in their family’s second-floor apartment when fire broke out in the kitchen. A neighbor, Robinson, 23, construction laborer, was alerted to the fire; her ran to the apartment and, with help from another man, climbed into a second-floor bedroom window. Crouching low amidst thick smoke, Robinson found Douglas on the floor and carried him to the window. He lowered Douglas to the persons on the ground. Despite limited visibility and nearby flames, Robinson penetrated the apartment again, located Daniel, and dragged him to the window, where he too was lowered to the others below. Robinson then climbed out the window and down to the ground. Douglas and Daniel were hospitalized for their injuries, from which Douglas later died.
