Terry W. Silva died after rescuing Andres Gonzalez from assault, Buttonwillow, California, May 18, 1996. At night, Gonzalez, 28, screamed for help as he was being attacked in a motel room by a man armed with a knife. Another motel guest, Silva, 43, route salesman, whose room was on another floor in an adjoining wing, was walking nearby. The assailant ceased his attack on Gonzalez when he responded to the door to find Silva there. As the assailant immediately set upon Silva, stabbing and beating him, Gonzalez fled to safety. The assailant returned to the room for a gun; he shot at Silva repeatedly then fled but was apprehended shortly. Gonzalez was hospitalized for treatment of numerous stab wounds. Silva died at the scene.
