Thaddeus Moonias rescued Thaddeus Atlookan from assault, Lansdowne House, Ontario, June 14, 1994. Atlookan, 36, police constable, approached a man who, armed with a shotgun, was on a shooting spree in the community. At close range, the man shot Atlookan in the forearm, knocking him to the ground and injuring him severely. Moonias, 34, project manager, witnessed the shooting from nearby and took cover. The assailant then taunted and threatened Moonias as Atlookan called for help. Moonias left his cover, rushed the assailant, and overpowered and disarmed him, the gun firing again as he did so. Moonias placed Atlookan’s handcuffs on the assailant then detained him until other police arrived. Atlookan was taken to a hospital for treatment. Moonias also required medical treatment, for a hand injury sustained during the rescue.
