Theodore M. Tahan Jr., helped to rescue Daniel J. Kaenter and Robert G. Schulte from burning, St. Louis, Missouri, September 13, 1981. After their automobile crashed, Kaenter, 34, and Schulte, 36, lay unconscious inside while flames engulfed the front of the automobile. Tahan, 21, college student, pulled Schulte from the wreckage with the help of another man and dragged him away. He then returned and assisted the other man in pulling Kaenter out and dragging him away. Moments later, the automobile’s engine exploded, filling the interior with flames. Kaenter and Schulte, treated at a hospital for injuries and burns, recovered.
