Theodore Palaia, 9, schoolboy, died attempting to save William J. Dewees, 6, from drowning, Chester, Pennsylvania, May 24, 1947. While wading on a submerged rock ledge that extended eight feet into the Chester River, William slipped into water eight feet deep. He was submerged briefly four feet from the ledge and called for help, attracting Theodore, who could not swim. Theodore, almost fully clothed, stepped onto the ledge from the bank as William again sank and rose flailing his arms. Theodore waded to the end of the ledge, extended an arm toward William, and taking another step suddenly sank in deep water. He rose struggling five feet from William. Both sank and were drowned. 3683-41870
