Thomas A. O’Brien saved Della Golden and attempted to save Goldie Rothstein from drowning, Darlington, Pennsylvania, August 8, 1919. Della, 15, and Goldie, 16, who were wading in Loyalhanna Creek, stepped into deep water and went under the surface. After they rose, they struggled together. O’Brien, 56, telegrapher, who was frail physically, swam 24 feet to the girls, but before he could take hold of them, Della grasped him around the neck, and the three went under water. They rose, but Goldie immediately sank and was drowned. Della released O’Brien, and O’Brien then swam feebly with her about eight feet to wadable water, where both grasped a tree extending out over the water and got to the bank. O’Brien was exhausted. 20084-1714
