Thomas A. Sniffen rescued Thomas J. Vance, Jr. from burning, Sparta, New Jersey, July 31, 1974. When the van he was driving rolled onto its top and the upturned engine caught fire, Vance, 27, was pinned inside, injured and unconscious. Sniffen, 21, college student, entered the inverted van through the open side doors. As flames spread into the interior of the vehicle, Sniffen, with difficulty, freed Vance and pulled him to the open doors. A youth then aided Sniffen in carrying Vance away from the van, which soon afterward was engulfed in flames. Vance recovered from injuries and burns he had sustained. 54186-6156
