Thomas Conroy, 57, city fireman, helped to save Amos Schweitzer, 28, from drowning, Niagara Falls, New York, June 5, 1906. Conroy waded out 30 feet in the Niagara River, 15 feet above the brink of the falls, and, standing in water 4 feet deep, supported the end of a ladder as it was extended from the shore. Holding to it with one hand, he assisted a man, who had climbed out on the ladder, to secure Schweitzer. Schweitzer had entered the water about 500 feet above the falls and was carried off by the current, but he had miraculously regained his footing at the point of rescue. 1261-171
