Thomas F. Dougherty died saving Paul M. Gula from homicidal attack, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 10, 1984. Gula, 33, was attacked in his company’s parking lot by a gang of men wielding clubs and knives. Witnessing the assault moments before he was to drive home for the day, Dougherty, 24, mechanic, ran to Gula, who was his co-worker, and fought with two of the assailants, distracting them long enough for Gula to escape. Several members of the gang then beat and stabbed Dougherty. Gula recovered from severe head and internal injuries. Dougherty’s wounds were fatal.
