Thomas F. Maher, 39, engineer, saved William Fitzgerald, 8, from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, September 29, 1906. Maher, who was overheated from working on a steam roller, jumped from a dock eight feet above the surface of the water into Dorchester Bay and, after swimming about 25 feet, reached William, with whom he swam, against the current, back to the dock.
