Thomas G, Basile sustained fatal injuries rescuing Victor M. Rodriquez from a machine, North Andover, Massachusetts, December 19, 1973. Rodriquez, 22, was working in the sand bin of a mulling machine when his hand became caught in the cable turning on the shaft that was raising a clump bucket in a channel alongside the bin. Unable to free himself, he called for help. Basile, 55, foundry foreman, ran to a point alongside the channel in which the dump bucket was ascending. Reaching across the channel and into the sand bin, he freed the hand of Rodriquez from the cable which had caused the amputation of the latter’s thumb. Basile was caught by the moving bucket which, ascending, pinned him against the metal top of the machine and held him there as it sought to turn over. The machine was shut off; and Basile, unconscious, was removed to a hospital. He died as the result of head and abdominal injuries.
