Thomas H. Bayne, 19, laborer, saved Ethel C. Taylor, 19, and M. Inez Trow, 18, from drowning, Trinity, Texas, September 3, 1912. Miss Taylor, Miss Trow, and two other young women, none of whom could swim, got into deep water 13 feet from the bank while amusing themselves in the Trinity River. Bayne and a companion, a brother of two of the young women, ran over 100 feet through shallow water and then swam to the women. Three of them grabbed Bayne’s companion, and Bayne grasped Miss Taylor, who had gone down twice, and swam to the bank with her. He then swam to the others and grasped Miss Trow, and with a hard jerk he pulled her from the others. She threw her arms around him, and they went beneath the surface twice before Bayne succeeded in freeing himself. He then swam to the bank with her. 10169-790
