Thomas H. Burns, 17, molder’s helper, died attempting to save Frank Newell, 5, from drowning, Lowell, Massachusetts, July 23, 1906. Thomas, who could not swim, tied a condemned hawser around his waist and jumped into the Pawtucket Canal to the rescue of Frank. The rope broke and Thomas sank. Frank was later rescued.
