Thomas H. White, Jr., rescued J. Stephen Wheeless from an attack by a bull, De Soto, Texas, June 14, 1971. When Wheeless, 43, county agricultural agent, went to the aid of a man who had been knocked down by a bull, the animal turned and charged him. The bull drove Wheeless forcibly against a wooden fence. White, 43, dairy specialist, grasped a rope attached to the bull’s nose ring and pulled the animal’s head away from Wheeless. White then ran ahead of the bull to a gate in the fence. He wrapped the rope around the gatepost and drew the head of the bull firmly against it. A longer rope then was used to lead the bull away. Wheeless recovered from injuries he had sustained.
