Thomas J. Drungell, 15, schoolboy, saved Arnold L. Detrick, 18, machine operator, from drowning, Scranton, Pennsylvania, July 28, 1954. While diving into a pond, Detrick struck his head on debris at the bottom. He was dazed and floundered to the surface in deep water 20 feet from a rock shelf at the base of a cliff. Thomas, lunged into the water and swam to Detrick. The latter grasped Thomas’s arm. Kicking Detrick, who was 30 pounds heavier and much taller than he, Thomas forced him to release his hold. He took hold of Detrick at the chin and with effort towed him within three feet of the rock shelf. Then a youth aided Thomas in lifting Detrick out of the water. Detrick was nauseated and suffered minor cuts. Thomas was tired and winded. Both recovered. 43328-3959
