Thomas Lee Chasen attempted to save William R. McClintock, Jr., from being struck by a train, Alexandria, Virginia, July 22, 1984. McClintock, 26, walked north in a railroad track on which a southbound train was approaching. Chasen, 33, railroad ticket clerk, gave chase to McClintock for approximately half a mile while warning him to clear the track. When the train, moving at 20 m.p.h., had closed to within 500 feet of McClintock, Chasen attempted to dislodge him from the track, but was pushed aside by McClintock. As the train came to within 100 feet, its horn blowing and its emergency brakes applied, Chasen again tried to move McClintock from the track. Narrowly missing Chasen as he jumped from its path, the train struck McClintock, who died five hours later.
