Thomas M. Booth saved Emily J. Dimond from drowning, Nags Head, North Carolina, July 7, 1988. Playing in the Atlantic Ocean near the beach, Emily, 12, and her brother were carried into deeper water by a strong rip current. Their uncle, Booth, 35, sales manager, and their father, who were nearby on the beach, entered the water and swam to them. As their father aided Emily’s brother, Booth, with difficulty, pushed Emily against the current and towed her to shore. Exhausted, Booth required hospital treatment for having inhaled seawater, and he recovered. Emily’s brother was rescued by others, but their father had lost consciousness and could not be revived when recovered later.
