Thomas M. Christenbury rescued Rufus Long from a cave-in, Charlotte, North Carolina, August 9, 1909. Working in a well 25 feet deep and 30 inches in diameter, Long, 76, was caught by the wall caving in and pinioning his arm, about 13 feet from the surface. Regardless of the warning of another man, Christenbury, 38, police chief, descended a ladder into the well. He removed the stones holding Long’s arm and, although there was danger of the overhanging wall falling, worked until he had freed Long, and then drew him to the ladder. Both got out safely. 4075-482
