Thomas N. Brooks saved John H. Donihoo from suffocation, Desert, Texas, July 7, 1936. Donihoo, 64, laborer, was overcome by gas in a well 20 feet deep, powder having been exploded in the well earlier in the day. Brooks, 40, farmer, who saw Donihoo slumped on the bottom and thought he had been affected by something in the well, called for help to his father, who was 1,000 feet away. Then by means of a rope Brooks lowered a ladder 15 feet long into the well, lowered himself by his hands to the ladder, and pulled the rope down as he descended to Donihoo, who was unconscious. Brooks fastened the rope around Donihoo’s chest; and holding him under one arm, he slowly climbed the ladder 10 feet. Brooks’s father then reached the well and raised Donihoo, Brooks pushing Donihoo from below. Brooks climbed to the top and was aided from the well. He was weak and nauseated. Donihoo was revived. 35741-2968
