Thomas W. Putnam saved M. Aileen Steere from drowning, Tomales, California, July 15, 1923. While swimming in Bodega Bay, Miss Steere, 23, got into distress and was carried by a current to a point 650 feet from shore. Putnam, 20, student, who was unaccustomed to swimming in the ocean or for any considerable distance, swam 425 feet to Miss Steere and swam 100 feet toward shore with her. There he was met by a man, who was a strong swimmer. The man took Miss Steere and swam with her about 75 feet nearer shore. A boat was rowed to them from shore, and the three were taken to shore in the boat. 23787-2136
