Thomas Weaver, 56, laborer, saved William F., 11, and Edward B. Pearl, 10, from drowning, Elmville, Connecticut, November 21, 1924. While William was skating on Whitestone Brook, he broke through the ice 60 feet from the bank and went into water seven feet deep. Edward ran to help him and broke through near William. Weaver, who was heavily clothed, crawled toward them over the ice which bent under him, and when he was almost within reach of William, the ice broke under him and he went under the water. As Weaver rose, William grabbed him, but Weaver freed himself and shoved William upon the ice. Weaver swam a stroke or two to Edward and shoved him upon the ice. Weaver tried in vain to get out of the hole, his legs becoming numb and the ice breaking under his grasp. A man then approached him on a board, and while Weaver held to a rope, the man broke a channel in the ice and drew Weaver to wadable water. Weaver had been in the water 20 minutes, and one of his feet was frozen. He was disabled a week. 25034-2066
