Tiare Marie Wells saved Monte Bassett from drowning, Cody, Wyoming, March 12, 1996. Bassett, 77, entered open water on Buffalo Bill Reservoir while attempting to save two ice fishermen who had broken through the ice at a point about 150 feet from the bank in water about 25 feet deep. Sightseeing at the reservoir, Ms. Wells, 18, college student, secured a horse halter to which a rope was attached and went out onto the ice toward the men, who were struggling in the 38-degree water. She threw one end of that line to the men, and Bassett grasped it. After several attempts and with difficulty, Ms. Wells pulled Bassett onto solid ice. The two other men submerged and drowned, their bodies recovered later that day
