Timothy Cunningham saved Margaret Gleason from drowning, Okauchee, Wisconsin, July 13, 1911. Miss Gleason, 20, who was a poor swimmer, became distressed in deep water 40 feet from the bank of Point Comfort Bay, in Lake Okauchee, and went beneath the surface. Cunningham, 60, laborer ran 300 feet to the water’s edge. He waded a short distance, until the water reached his chest, and then, although tired from his run, swam to her. Cunningham grasped her wrist, and she grasped his shirt collar firmly. They went beneath the surface, and Miss Gleason became unconscious. She did not come to the surface. Cunningham struggled, and with great difficulty kept at the surface. Retaining his grasp on Miss Gleason, Cunningham became nearly exhausted. His daughter then reached him with a boat and helped him to get Miss Gleason into it. Miss Gleason revived in a few minutes. Cunningham held to the boat until it reached a pier.
